My Nordics, as told by architect and creator Eva-Lotta Axelsson

An insider’s guide to the Nordics with Eva-Lotta Axelsson

Architect and creator Eva-Lotta Axelsson moves through the world with a deep respect for architecture, materials and craftsmanship. At Nude Ateljé, her Stockholm showroom set in a former bathhouse once reserved for Scandinavia’s elite, these elements come together in quiet balance. It’s a space that invites lingering – a study in simplicity, detail and purpose – so make sure to book an appointment. Here, Axelsson recently presented her latest creation: the Notkate side table, a lesson in form and function.

Her style – rooted in the stark, windswept landscapes of Öland and shaped by a long-standing love for Japanese design – has influenced her work on boutique hotels, private homes and even the Chimes of Light installation for the Denniz Pop Awards.

We spoke with her about the places that draw her back, the spaces that make her pause and the details that stay with her long after she’s left.

Copenhagen Denmark travel guide
Nude Ateljé Stockholm Sweden showroom review

“I love running along the shoreline …”

In the Nordics, my favourite country is …

Denmark. Built on islands, it offers stunning natural landscapes, from beautiful beaches to vast countryside. I love running along the shoreline, where the sea meets the sky in such a peaceful way. Denmark also has a strong tradition of craftsmanship, with a deep-rooted culture of design and innovation. What truly stands out to me, though, is its open and inclusive society, which fosters creativity and a strong sense of community. Copenhagen, in particular, has a multicultural atmosphere that adds so much vibrancy to the city’s character.

For a dose of urban pulse, I head to …

Copenhagen, which has an atmosphere that draws me in – it’s vibrant yet laid-back, striking a perfect balance between modernity and tradition. I also appreciate the warmth and openness of the people, as well as the city’s deep commitment to design and innovation, visible in every corner.

Havsvidden Resort Åland Finland hotel review

“Exploring the fjords by boat, surrounded by sheer cliffs and crystal-clear waters, is nothing short of breathtaking.”

For the perfect close-to-nature experience, I visit …

… Besseggen in Norway. Hiking through its dramatic mountain landscapes brings a real sense of tranquillity and connection to the wild. Exploring the fjords by boat, surrounded by sheer cliffs and crystal-clear waters, is nothing short of breathtaking. Staying in small mountain cabins adds a rustic charm, allowing for a true escape from the everyday. And, of course, enjoying locally sourced food is always a highlight – it perfectly complements the region’s unspoiled natural beauty.

For a memorable getaway, I check myself into …

Havsvidden Resort in Åland during autumn. The scenery at this time of year is spectacular, creating the perfect backdrop for relaxation. I love renting one of the small houses along the water’s edge, where I can unwind in the sauna before taking a bracing dip in the sea. The combination of nature, tranquillity, and simple pleasures makes it a stay to remember.

“Trädgården’s outdoor setting is ideal for soaking up the lively atmosphere with great cocktails …”

For a great meal, I go to …

… Indio Kitchen in Stockholm. It’s an exceptional dining experience and located just around the corner from where we live in Södermalm. It’s a favourite spot for gathering with family and friends. The menu showcases a fantastic fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, known as Nikkei, offering a unique and flavourful experience. The service is outstanding, and the warm, welcoming staff make it feel like a true escape. The stylish interior adds to the atmosphere, transporting you to another part of the world – perfect for an imaginary exotic getaway in the heart of Stockholm. My go-to order is the tasting menu, where the chef creates four Nikkei dishes based on the finest fresh ingredients of the day – a true journey into Indio’s world of Nikkei.

For a fun night out, I head to …

… Trädgården/Under Bron in Stockholm – it has fantastic energy! In summer, Trädgården’s outdoor setting is ideal for soaking up the lively atmosphere with great cocktails, while Under Bron offers a more underground, edgy vibe, perfect for dancing into the early hours. My drink of choice? A classic Negroni.

Studio Oliver Gustav Copenhagen Denmark

“I always make time for the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art …”

For a dose of retail therapy, I shop at …

… Jus in Stockholm. It is a multi-brand store that I love and that focuses on avant-garde fashion, art and culture. A fixture for over 20 years, Jus offers one of the most exciting and inspiring retail experiences in the city.

For a dose of culture, I head to …

Copenhagen, which is my go-to for culture. I love renting a bike and exploring the city’s unique showrooms, like Frama and Studio Oliver Gustav, as well as uncovering hidden gems in antique and second-hand shops along the way. The city’s vibrant design scene is endlessly inspiring. I always make time for the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, which blends art, architecture and nature in a breathtaking way, and the Designmuseum, where I can immerse myself in Denmark’s rich design heritage.

Alvaret Öland Sweden travel guide

“[Alvaret’s] barren, windswept landscape is truly one of a kind …”

For a hidden gem, I recommend …

… the island of Öland – especially for horseback riding or walking across Alvaret. This barren, windswept landscape is truly one of a kind, with its quiet, expansive terrain and low-lying vegetation. The earthy tones, in all their rich hues, create an almost otherworldly atmosphere. It’s a place that feels untouched by time, offering a peaceful retreat where you can disconnect completely and immerse yourself in nature.

For me, a quintessential Nordic experience is …

… sailing through Stockholm’s archipelago and anchoring at a secluded rocky outcrop. There’s something magical about swimming in the cool, clear water before cooking a simple meal over an open fire as the evening sets in. As the sun dips below the horizon, the landscape’s quiet beauty makes time feel like it’s slowing down. It’s the perfect blend of nature, simplicity and the calming rhythm of the outdoors – everything that defines the Nordic way of life.
