Kunstsilo

What is the museum in a nutshell?

Kunstsilo, located in Kristiansand, Norway, is a groundbreaking art institution transformed from an abandoned grain silo into a contemporary art museum. Spearheaded by collector Nicolai Tangen and designed by Mestres Wåge, Mendoza Partida, and BAX Studio, Kunstsilo is set to become one of Northern Europe’s most innovative cultural hubs. The museum houses the Tangen Collection, the world’s largest private collection of Nordic modernist art, along with Sørlandets Kunstmuseum’s permanent collection.

What is showcased?

Kunstsilo’s exhibitions primarily feature the Tangen Collection, a comprehensive assembly of Nordic modernist art from the mid-20th century. The inaugural exhibition, Passions of the North, showcases around 600 works from notable Nordic artists, including pieces from the CoBrA movement and modernist photographers. This collection, curated by Åsmund Thorkildsen, offers a rich, diverse overview of the region’s artistic movements. Additionally, the museum includes innovative digital art installations like the S-Lab, which brings artworks to life through immersive technologies. Augmented reality tours are also available, making the art accessible and engaging for all ages.

What is the architecture like?

The architectural transformation of Kunstsilo is as impressive as its collections. Originally designed by Norwegian functionalist architects Korsmo and Aarsland in the 1930s, the grain silo has been meticulously converted to preserve its historical essence while introducing modern elements. The redesign, led by Mestres Wåge, Mendoza Partida and BAX Studio, includes dramatic structural changes such as cutting through the silo cylinders to create spacious atriums and exhibition halls. The new design features industrial extensions and large, top-lit spaces that provide a striking contrast to the raw concrete of the original structure. The rooftop terrace and bar offer panoramic views, blending Scandi comfort with the industrial chic of the museum’s core.
