Nordic Knots

What’s the showroom in a nutshell?

Located in the heart of Stockholm’s design district, the first physical space of Nordic Knots is a breathtaking former movie theatre, the Eriksbergsteatern, dating back to the early 1900s. The Eriksbergsteatern cinema screened its first film in 1918 and its last in 1986. To transform the space into a captivating showroom, the Berglunds, founders of Nordic Knots, called upon New York-based architect and interior designer Giancarlo Valle. Together, they preserved the interior’s mottled green marble, sprawling terrazzo floor, and dramatic Grand Carrara marble staircase while adding contemporary, playful elements to the space.

What is the aesthetic of the brand?

Nordic Knots is founded on the Scandinavian tradition of functional design with a minimalist aesthetic. The brand focuses on high-quality materials, timeless design, and ethical production practices to create great rugs that last. The rugs are designed in the Stockholm atelier and handmade by highly skilled and experienced GoodWeave™ Certified weavers in Bhadohi, India, ensuring not only exceptional craftsmanship but also adherence to ethical labour standards.

What are the signature pieces?

Nordic Knots’ signature pieces embrace both traditional craftsmanship and sensuality that sets them apart from other Scandinavian designs. Each rug exhibits a unique texture, warmth, and individuality that makes a memorable impression. The collaboration with Giancarlo Valle led to a collection of rugs inspired by Valle’s Latin American heritage and Sweden’s rich folklore. Displayed under lighting created by Mexican designer Carlos H Matos, these rugs come alive in the showroom, celebrating Nordic Knots’ collections, heritage, and quality.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

Norrmalm is the central borough of Stockholm. Peppered with parks, waterways and an island, this neighbourhood shows off the city’s ritzy side through theatres, museums and glorious plazas. Norrmalm has some excellent places to stay, great shopping, some very good restaurants and a couple of must-visit museums – not least Nationalmuseum, which was re-inaugurated in 2018, and Hallwylska Museet, an incredible inner-city palace that remains virtually untouched since the late 1800s.
