Amerikalinjen

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Occupying the grand neo-baroque former headquarters of the now-closed cruise ship company Norwegian America Line, which ferried thousands of hopeful immigrants across the Atlantic to America, is boutique hotel Amerikalinjen. The property fuses a generous pinch of nostalgia with the present to form a modern hospitality experience for the curious-minded modern-day explorers.

What are the rooms like?

Defined by their high ceilings and commanding paned windows, each of the hotel’s 122 rooms, some of them overlooking the bustling Jernbane Square, are layered with subtle nostalgic references to luxurious ocean liners and the golden age of cruising. The property’s suites, housed in Norwegian America Line’s former board rooms, boast stunning original ornate ceilings.

What else?

A series of humming public spaces are Amerikalinjen’s main draw. There’s the cool Atlas brasserie and café that serves breakfast and dinner, and the Pier 42 bar, named after the iconic pier located in New York, where a comprehensive cocktail menu revolves around finding the perfect complementary contrasts from Norway and New York in a glass. The intimate club Gustav is inspired by New York’s jazz scene, and Haven, a covered green space in the very heart of the hotel, offers guests a breather from the hustle and bustle. The hotel’s impressive art collection, curated by Sune Nordgren, takes its cues from America and includes work by Alex Katz and Shepard Fairey.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

Although the Jernbane Square right in front of Oslo Central Station doesn’t necessarily show off the Norwegian capital’s best assets, its central location is hard to beat. It is near Oslo Cathedral and Karl Johans Gate, the main boulevard that runs through the central shopping district and up to the Royal Palace. The Bjørvika harbour area, with the city’s Instagram-friendly landmarks the Oslo Opera House, the Munch museum and the spectacular Barcode project, are located less than a couple of kilometres away.
