The Nordics • Stay • Cabincore: the top 14 remote cottages and cabins in Norway
Norway is a land of enchanting beauty and rugged wilderness and offers a unique retreat experience with its luxurious cottages and cabins, often found in remote areas. Tucked away in the country’s stunning landscapes, the cottages and cabins in Norway provide excellent conditions for immersive nature getaways. Embracing the traditional Norwegian lifestyle, these stays are not just accommodations but rather a journey into a world of serenity and adventure. Imagine waking up to breathtaking fjord views, spending your days hiking through pristine forests and evenings under the mystical Northern Lights.
‘Cabincore‘ is a lifestyle and design aesthetic that celebrates the cosy and nature-inspired elements of cabin living. This trend is deeply rooted in the appreciation of simplicity, natural materials and a harmonious blend with the surrounding environment. The essence of cabincore is to create a warm, inviting space that feels like a retreat from the modern world, often featuring elements such as exposed wood, warm textiles and earthy colours. It‘s about embracing a slower pace of life, where moments are savoured and there‘s a strong connection to the natural world.
The Nordic region excels in embodying the cabincore aesthetic due to several reasons. Firstly, the Nordic countries are renowned for their breathtaking natural landscapes, which provide the perfect backdrop for cabin-style living. With vast forests, serene lakes and rugged coastlines, these environments inspire the cabincore ethos of living in harmony with nature.
Additionally, the Nordic cultural emphasis on hygge – a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of cosiness and comfortable conviviality – aligns perfectly with the cabincore philosophy. This combination of stunning natural settings, cultural values that prioritise cosiness and simplicity, and a skilful blending of functionality with aesthetics, makes the Nordic region particularly adept at capturing the essence of cabincore.

Few Nordic hotels can compete with the view from The Bolder, a unique retreat located on a cliff edge overlooking Lysefjorden in Norway. The complex is made up of two types of cabins – Star Lodges and Sky Lodges. Star Lodges were designed by Norwegian studio Snøhetta and homeware brand Vipp, while Sky Lodges were designed by Norgeshus. Commissioned by local developer Tom Bjarte Norland, the project is designed to immerse hikers in the nature surrounding the fjord. The cabins are scattered across the natural setting and elevated on large concrete pillars to reduce their impact on the site. The architecture and interiors of the Star Lodges are designed to blend in with the natural surroundings, featuring untreated red cedar for the cabin’s structure and cladding that greys with time, blending in with the rocky terrain. Sky Lodges offer an even more elevated experience and provide an even more panoramic view of the surroundings.
