Hotel Stelor

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

In the embrace of Gotland’s serene landscapes, Hotel Stelor is a testament to rustic elegance and heartfelt hospitality. A mere 30 minutes from the bustling streets of Visby, this gem offers a retreat into tranquillity and charm. Originally a farmhouse dating back centuries, it’s been lovingly transformed by My Wrethagen and Linus Ström into a boutique hotel with just seven rooms, promising an intimate and personalised stay. Drawing visitors from across Scandinavia, especially during the sun-kissed summer months, Stelor a destination hotel where guests can immerse themselves in the idyllic beauty of Gotland, enjoy the freshest of local cuisines and unwind surrounded by music.

What are the rooms like?

Stepping into any of the seven uniquely appointed rooms at Hotel Stelor feels like entering a personal sanctuary designed with relaxation in mind. The decor, inspired by the quintessential Swedish summer house, combines joyful prints, lush geraniums on the windowsill and plush sofas that invite you to sink in with a book or a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Our room gave us a sense of authentic Gotlandic charm, making it feel less like a hotel and more like a stay at a friend’s summer retreat. The attention to detail, from the homemade bread at breakfast to the carefully curated furnishings that guests can purchase, reflects the passion and dedication of Wrethagen and Ström in creating a space that’s as welcoming as it is beautiful.

What else?

The food, primarily sourced from the surrounding farms, becomes an even more significant aspect of the Stelor experience when you consider that Ström, one of the owners, is also a chef. His passion for culinary excellence and sustainability is evident in every dish served, turning meals into delicious explorations of the island’s bounty. Hotel Stelor becomes quite the music scene over the summer months, hosting concerts by Swedish musicians that transform its serene landscape into a vibrant festival of sounds and harmony, adding a unique rhythm to the already enchanting atmosphere. Our favourite moments included lounging in the vast garden, a serene space perfect for meditation or enjoying the shade of old fruit trees. The hotel’s relaxed atmosphere, emphasised by the lounge’s complimentary coffee and homemade cake, is a reminder of the simple joys in life.

What’s the island like?

Off Sweden’s southeastern coast, Gotland emerges as a realm of enchantment, where history, language, and culture converge into a distinct island experience. Favoured by Swedes as a quintessential summer retreat, this Baltic haven offers an escape that even locals find exotic, with its landscapes and traditions differing from mainland Sweden. Visitors are drawn to ancient Viking remnants, the serene beauty of untouched beaches, and the medieval grandeur of Visby’s city walls, a 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site encircling the old town. The island’s unique limestone formations, known as Rauks, sculpted by millennia of natural forces, stand along the coast, serving as dramatic sentinels of Gotland’s rugged yet beautiful shores, creating a surreal and captivating panorama for all who explore this extraordinary island.
