What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Electrifying is undoubtedly the word that comes to mind when stepping inside Sommerro, an Oslo hotel housed in the 1930s building that was the former HQ of Oslo Lysverk, the city’s electrical company. Located in Frogner, one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, this impressive property has 231 rooms (including the accompanying Villa Inkognito with eleven suites), four restaurants, three bars, a gym and the uber-cool public Vestkantbadet Art Deco pool, which features a stunning mosaic by artist Per Krogh.

What are the rooms like?

Staying true to the spirit of the era in which it was built, the hotel’s 231 rooms take their cues from the 1930s decadent Art Deco style. Think oak parquet floors, opulent furniture, whimsical Murano chandeliers, curated artworks and plush hand-knotted rugs. Amenities are top-notch: a bed by Hilding Anderson, toiletries by Byredo and a Marshall speaker. Sommerro’s junior suites, also known as the ‘wow rooms’, feature a luxe bathroom clad in dusty pink marble with a deep-soaking marble tub.

From hearty brasserie-style dishes to Tak, an innovative Norwegian-Japanese spot from Swedish chef Frida Ronge, Sommerro offers plenty of dining and drinking options. Izakaya is our informal street food and cocktail bar, also run by Ronge. Ekspedisjonshallen is an all-day neighbourhood eatery, and at To Søstre guests can enjoy afternoon tea in elegant surroundings. At Plah & Ahaan, the Thai restaurant helmed by chef Terje Ommundsen, while Barramon serves us pintxos and wine Basque-style. There is also a strong emphasis on wellness (perhaps to get rid of some of those calories from dinner) as Sommerro also boasts a sprawling wellness paradise that includes a series of treatment rooms, a roman bath and sauna, a vast fitness room and, of course, the aforementioned original swimming pool with a magnificent Per Krogh mosaic.
