Stay by area: our top hotel picks in Östermalm, Sweden

The curated list of best hotels in Östermalm, Sweden

Polished, proud and posh, Östermalm is where Stockholm and, in fact, Sweden dresses up. Grand boulevards lined with historic townhouses meet sleek design stores, discreet embassies and high-end restaurants serving buttered seafood to the well-heeled crowd. It’s the city’s most classically elegant district – and its hotel scene plays to that strength. Think sophisticated interiors, whisper-quiet service and rooftops that open onto sweeping views of Djurgården and the royal cityscape beyond. Yet there’s substance beneath the gloss. With walkable access to museums, cutting-edge galleries and a growing number of edgy bars hidden behind the grandeur, Östermalm offers a refined but dynamic base for those after a more curated Stockholm stay.

Ett Hem

Staying at Ett Hem – Swedish for ‘a home’ – feels like a home away from home. Since its opening in 2012, owner Jeanette Mix has perfected Ett Hem’s low-key yet elegant atmosphere that makes guests feel like part of the household. Housed in three neighbouring red-brick townhouses, Mix enlisted the help of Ilse Crawford in designing the 22-bedroom boutique hotel that also houses a lush patio garden and greenhouse, a cosy kitchen, a well-stocked library, a grand sitting room, a gym and a Hamam. The winter of 2022 and 2023 will see the opening of three residences for long-term stays. Read the full article on Ett Hem.

Villa Dagmar

Modelled after grand continental retreats like Villa d’Este and Capri’s Villa San Michele, Villa Dagmar brings the idea of a city villa to lower Östermalm, Stockholm. Housed in a late 19th-century Art Nouveau building fused with a former caramel factory, it opened in 2021 under the Malmström family of Hotel Diplomat fame. Its 70 rooms blend pale oak, velvet and marble, inspired by European travels and artists like Karin Larsson and Sonia Delaunay. A piazza-like atrium, secret passage to Östermalms Saluhall, spa, gym and a boutique by designer Susan Szatmáry complete the picture. It’s grand yet intimate, and unmistakably continental in spirit.

Hotel Diplomat

Commanding a prime spot on Strandvägen, Stockholm’s most elegant boulevard, Hotel Diplomat is where classic glamour meets contemporary edge. Housed in an Art Nouveau building with views over Nybroviken, it draws a sharp crowd of locals and travellers who appreciate the art-filled interiors, sculptural staircases and hushed elegance of its salons. Rooms are pared-back but polished, with neutral palettes, Swedish design pieces and the occasional punch of colour. The restaurant terrace is a scene in itself come summer, ideal for people-watching over seafood and spritzes. Add to that a discreet spa, faultless service and walking distance to Östermalm’s boutiques and Djurgården’s leafy trails, and you’ve got a city stay that ticks all the boxes.

Hotel Hasselbacken

The legendary Hotel Hasselbacken, once the hub of Stockholm’s cultural and entertainment scene, is set to make a comeback thanks to Björn Ulvaeus, one of the members of Swedish pop sensation ABBA. The goal is to create a year-round hub for music, culture, food and experiences in Djurgården, Stockholm’s most beloved destination. Hasselbacken has a long history, dating back to the 1700s when its wooded slopes were a popular spot for Stockholm residents to visit. It became a hub for the city’s entertainment and dining scene in the 1800s and remained so until the 1970s. This comeback is underway with the reopening of the 113-room Hotel Hasselbacken.

Story Hotel Riddargatan

Located down a quiet side street just off bustling Stureplan, Story Hotel Riddargatan is Stockholm’s original cool kid. It’s unpolished in all the right ways – think exposed concrete walls, industrial lighting and vintage furniture that feels more Berlin than Birger Jarlsgatan. Rooms are compact but full of personality, with street art murals, curated playlists and rain showers. Downstairs, the bar buzzes nightly with a mix of locals and in-the-know visitors sipping cocktails under moody lighting. There’s no spa, no concierge, just smart design, sharp pricing and our personal feature –a location that puts the city’s best shopping, nightlife and metro access at your feet. It’s edgy, effortless and still ahead of the curve.
