What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Few Nordic hotels can compete with the view from The Bolder, a unique retreat located on a cliff edge overlooking Lysefjorden in Norway. The complex is made up of two types of cabins – Star Lodges and Sky Lodges. Star Lodges were designed by Norwegian studio Snøhetta and homeware brand Vipp, while Sky Lodges were designed by Norgeshus. Commissioned by local developer Tom Bjarte Norland, the project is designed to immerse hikers in the nature surrounding the fjord. The cabins are scattered across the natural setting and elevated on large concrete pillars to reduce their impact on the site. The architecture and interiors of the Star Lodges are designed to blend in with the natural surroundings, featuring untreated red cedar for the cabin’s structure and cladding that greys with time, blending in with the rocky terrain. Sky Lodges offer an even more elevated experience and provide an even more panoramic view of the surroundings.

What are the rooms like?

The Star Lodges range in size from 38 to 60 square metres and offer a unique, asymmetric form with a unique interior and view of the landscape. Inside, the cabins contain a built-in bed and bathroom, and an upper level with a kitchen and dining area fitted out by Vipp. Their floor plans are designed to be as open as possible, maximising natural light and views from the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. The cabins are elevated on concrete pillars and lined with large panes of glass that bring the outdoors inside, creating the illusion of floating in the air. Sky Lodges offer an even more elevated experience and provide an even more panoramic view of the surroundings.

What else?

The Bolder offers guests a secluded and unique retreat in the nature surrounding the fjord. Amenities include a kitchen and dining area for guests in both types of lodges. The cabins also feature skylights designed for stargazing, allowing guests to fully immerse in the natural beauty of the area at night. There are also a rope bridge and elevator that connect the Sky Lodges to the ground, providing guests with an opportunity to enjoy the elevated views of the fjord and mountains. Additionally, the location of the complex offers many opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and stargazing. The complex is also planning to expand its public spaces by adding a lounge and a restaurant in the next few years.
