The Gatehouse at Kåseholms Slott

Bespoke partnership with Kåseholms Slott

What’s the villa in a nutshell?

The Gatehouse, part of the Kåseholm Castle estate dating back to 1632, is a hidden gem tucked just inside the iron gates of the property in the southern Swedish region of Skåne. Originally the home of the estate’s caretaker, it now emerges on the hospitality scene with a bold fusion of design and art. Visionaries Jamie White and Joakim Silvandersson have transformed this villa into a vibrant stay. Their previous ventures in California showed their knack for unique accommodations, but the Gatehouse at Kåseholm goes a step further, providing an exciting escape from the ordinary. Here, we really love how guests can immerse themselves in a world of theatrical luxury, offering a fresh take on the rural retreat.

What are the rooms like?

The Gatehouse is a novel model of sustainable luxury. It can host up to six guests and has transformed from a caretaker’s cottage into a showcase of sustainable materials and stylish decor. The interiors, designed by White and Silvandersson themselves, are an eclectic mix of muted and sumptuous luxury. Each room displays a commitment to eco-friendly living without sacrificing elegance, featuring Bolon flooring and handpicked furnishings from Rubn lighting and Ballingslöv kitchens. For those seeking a different atmosphere, the lounge offers a bold, colour-blocked interior with dark blue walls and a red ceiling, complete with a pop-art-inspired portrait of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden above the bar cabinet, making it a striking contrast to the rest of the house. Despite the luxurious setting, we find the villa is offered at a very reasonable price per night, with a minimum stay of two nights.

What else?

Beyond the plush accommodations at the Gatehouse, the expansive grounds of Kåseholm estate offer a personal adventure like no other. Our first visit felt like stepping into an unexpectedly exotic locale, far removed from the typical Scandinavian settings we were accustomed to. It’s not uncommon for guests to find themselves gently herding a stray sheep back to its flock during a morning stroll, a charming interaction with the estate’s diverse animal inhabitants. Adding to the cultural allure are the Northern Exposure art gallery and the recently inaugurated design centre, both integral to the estate’s creative pulse. Completing this journey of discovery, the villa’s elaborate chef’s kitchen stands ready to awaken your culinary creativity.

What’s the region like?

Skåne is a southernmost region of Sweden known for its diverse landscapes, rich history and culture, and unique culinary traditions. The region is characterized by its rolling hills, picturesque countryside, and the blend of Scandinavian and European influences. Skåne is also known for its beautiful beaches, making it a popular destination for beach-goers and water sports enthusiasts. Its location, being the bridge between Sweden and Denmark, has shaped its culture and architecture, making it a unique and diverse destination. The region is also known for its vibrant art scene and its farm-to-table philosophy, which makes it known as Sweden’s larder due to its fertile farmlands, producing a wide variety of local produce such as seafood, berries and vegetables. The major cities in Skåne are Malmö, Lund and Helsingborg.
