Zander K Hotel

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Zander K Hotel, a standout member of the De Bergenske hotel family, seamlessly blends history and modernity in Bergen’s city centre. Swedish architects Claesson Koivisto Rune transformed a 1930s parking garage and a 1920s bike shop into a striking, contemporary 249-room hotel. Its deep blue modern addition echoes Bergen’s skyline, creating a visually distinct triptych that fits perfectly into the local architectural language. Opened in 2017, Zander K is named after Alexander Kaae, an 18th-century Bergen merchant known for his philanthropy. The hotel prides itself on its forward-thinking approach and affordable luxury, and we feel it is the perfect choice for the modern-minded traveller.

What are the rooms like?

The rooms at Zander K Hotel are a masterclass in minimalist design and comfort. Designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune, the interiors feature a soothing palette of blues, whites and greys, complemented by locally sourced wood and stone. Each room includes custom-made furniture, such as mirror-finished stainless steel desks with rounded edges and the distinctive ’Zander’ two-tone bedside tables. The playful ’Summer Rain’ curtains, designed to evoke Bergen’s famous weather, add a whimsical touch. Arne Jacobsen lighting and Thonet seating further enhance the aesthetic, creating a space that is both functional and stylish.

What else?

Guests can enjoy the all-day restaurant Matbar, which features a forest-like ambiance with its scattered-leaf-pattern tiled floor and an array of natural materials. The hotel also boasts a gym, conference rooms and free WiFi. The lobby, with its blend of solid wood, exposed concrete and polished marble, is a theatre of material tactility. For a cosy evening, guests can relax in the lounge with a glass of red wine, appreciating the unique rain-themed artworks by Jesper Waldersten.

What’s the city like?

Nestled between the peaks of seven surrounding mountains and Norway’s west coast in the Vestland region, Bergen captivates with its natural beauty and urban charm. The UNESCO-listed Bryggen district showcases vibrant wooden buildings, while the city serves as a gateway to breathtaking fjords. Bergen enchants art and design enthusiasts with its street art, contemporary architecture, and cultural landmarks like the Edvard Grieg Museum and KODE Art Museums. With a rich maritime history and dynamic food scene, Bergen offers an unforgettable journey into Norway’s scenic splendour.
