What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

When Alexander Kolpin ended his career as a successful ballet dancer (at the height of his career, he was awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse for best male dancer) he rejoined the family business to become a hotelier. The run-down townhouse Opera Hotel was renamed Sanders (after Alexander) and transformed into a sophisticated and intimate bolthole in the middle of town located not far from Kongens Nytorv. London-based design firm Lind + Almond was enlisted to create the interior design, which is a surprisingly successful amalgamation between Danish mid-century modern, Karen Blixen-esque colonial and Parisian bistro style.

What are the rooms like?

The former hotel’s 90 rooms were decreased to only 54, making room for incredible comfort in each room. There are books in each room and the bathrooms are equipped with toiletries from Sicilian brand Ortigia. A master apartment – found behind the door of room 405 – has a grand living room with a fireplace, a kitchenette and dining room and a connecting room, which allows for longer stays.

Inside the three 19th century townhouses that make up Hotel Sanders, you’ll find yourself entertained for days. For breakfast, head down to the ground floor and take your pick of where to consume that all-important first meal of the day – there is a cosy kitchen space, a lobby, a gorgeous courtyard and bistro-style seating along the street. Breakfast at Hotel Sanders is completely devoid of generic buffets – everything on the menu is made to order. The Tata cocktail bar is inspired by a classic theatre bar featuring red velvet mixed with timber and rattan. The glass-covered rooftop bar, filled with greenery and rattan furniture, is a nice spot to end the day. The hotel has its own fleet of bicycles for guests to use during their stay.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

Copenhagen’s Indre By is the area bounded by the lakes circling the inner city and the harbour. This historic centre reflects the entire city’s extent during the reign of King Christian IV (1577-1648), when the town was fortified. It is home to most of Copenhagen’s museums and attractions. Strøget, the city’s famed pedestrian shopping street, runs right through it. If you’re new to the city, we recommend you start here, right at the heart of the bustling city, working your way outward to other neighbouring areas as you explore.
