Filippa K

What’s the store in a nutshell?

Swedish fashion brand Filippa K’s 2022 rebrand is fully manifested at the Helsinki flagship store on Mikonkatu, a bustling pedestrian street in the heart of town. Here, Stockholm-based architecture practice Profan flexes the brand’s newfound youthful vigour through the striking blood orange flooring that runs throughout the retail space. A sculptural concrete staircase connects the two-storey space that is dotted with repurposed aluminium artworks by Berlin-based artist Lukas Wegwerth and vintage furniture, including a 1980s German postmodern sofa originally designed by Burkhard Vogtherr and upholstered with Swedish sheepskin. The fitting room, arguable the store’s most handsome area, features psychedelic brushed steel plates across the back wall and floor.

What is the aesthetic of the brand?

Filippa K’s 2022 revamp is the result of newly appointed creative director Liisa Kessler’s aim to bring the brand a fresh international perspective. Having worked for the likes of Chloé, Lanvin and Saint Laurent, the Finnish-German designer expresses a longing to reconnect with her Nordic roots through her work with Filippa K, building on the legacy of simplicity, style, quality and the power of ease while simultaneously exploring what Scandinavian fashion means today in this new era for the house.

What are the signature pieces?

Filippa K’s garments take inspiration from everyday life – pieces that can be worn again and again, with a flexibility that allows mixing and matching to create various outfits, and that last season after season. Inspired by the tuxedo, the Nadine blazer is a bold statement piece in any woman’s wardrobe, and the oversized Sammy cotton shirt is another popular Filippa K wardrobe staple.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

Helsinki’s commercial centre Kluuvi is blessed with a fascinating array of architectural styles, including some fine neo-romantic buildings. The district’s smart boulevards are lined with chic restaurants and upscale shopping, and the two major department stores Stockmann and Sokos are found here. This is also where Helsinki’s art nouveau Central Station, the Ateneum art museum, the National Theatre, the Kaisa House and many buildings belonging to the University of Helsinki are. The Kaisaniemi Park and the Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden are the lungs of Kluuvi.
