Solo Sokos Hotel Torni

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Hotel Torni, built in 1931, was a pioneering hotel in many aspects. Housed in Helsinki’s first skyscraper, a rooftop bar, as well as an American-style cocktail bar with round bar counters, the hotel was a happening spot. In 2022, Hotel Torni completed a two-year revamp and enlisted the help of design studios Joanna Laajisto and Fyra to restore some of the historic property’s former pizzas and understated luxury.

What are the rooms like?

Local studio Joanna Laajisto has set out to infuse her signature paired-back yet comfortable style into all of Hotel Torni’s 154 rooms. The hotel boasts an impressive art collection that is on display throughout its facilities, including the rooms.

What else?

In the hotel’s lobby, guests are greeted by one of Finnish artist Kaarlo Haltia’s sculptures and the music by composer Petri Alanko. The rooftop bar, which saw visitors from near and far gather for a view of Helsinki’s cityscape, is yet again a must-visit spot for a late-night cocktail. The iconic American Bar, located under a beautiful glass dome, has also been reinstalled after having been absent from the hotel for many years. At restaurant Or, chef Matias Nitovuori runs a modern brasserie and wine bar sporting a glamorous decor by studio Fyra.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

The hip downtown Kamppi district was named after the Swedish word ‘kampen’ – the battle – and refers to the military training field in the area. The area showcased some of the oldest wooden buildings in the entire city. The eastern side of the district includes, among other sights, the Amos Rex Museum, Kamppi Mall, the Tennispalatsi building, the Narinkkatori Market and the Tavastia Club. The western side, on the other hand, has the Alexander Theatre and the Hietalahti Square, known for its flea market and for its market hall, which nowadays houses many small restaurants.
