Hotel Christiania Teater

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Right smack in the heart of town, a stone’s throw from the National Theatre, is an Oslo hotel where the vibe is spelled D-R-A-M-A. As a former theatre, performing arts and culture have been part of this Nordic Renaissance 1918 landmark building’s history for over a century, and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2015. Flaunting an eclectic and eccentric look, local interior designer Anemone Wille Våge has worked overtime to make sure this hotel won’t ever get boring.

What are the rooms like?

Hotel Christiania Teater’s 102 rooms and suites, ranging in size from twelve to 30 square metres, are individually decorated. The common denominator is a textured and layered look that is slightly more paired-down than the bright and fun public areas. Which we feel is a good thing, because who wants to sleep in a carnival tent? All rooms have large comfortable beds, a rain shower and toiletries from New York beauty brand C.O Bigelow. Pooches are welcome too.

What else?

Hotel Christiania Teater is popular with locals, who love to drop in for a glass of wine in the wine bar (there are 50 types of wine by the glass, and 1 400 types by the bottle) or a white pizza from restaurant Teatro. Breakfast is, unlike the hotel’s decor, a more is less kind of thing with sourdough bread from neighbourhood bakery Ille Brød, local cheeses and charcuteries, freshly squeezed orange juice and Fairtrade certified coffee. There’s no gym or spa on location, but guests have free access to the nearby Sats gym.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

Sentrum, which is Norwegian for ‘centre’, is the heart of Oslo and where most of the city’s major attractions are located. The neighbourhood’s main street, Karl Johans gate, connects Oslo’s downtown train station to the Royal Palace, one of the city’s most recognizable sights. The Bjørvika harbour area, with the city’s Instagram-friendly landmarks the Oslo Opera House, the Munch museum and the spectacular Barcode project, are also in the Sentrum area.
