Gothenburg

Gothenburg – city of vivid transformation

Halfway between Copenhagen and Oslo, along Sweden’s rocky coastline in the provinces of Västergötland, Bohuslän and Halland, lies Gothenburg (Göteborg in Swedish). Historically regarded as a lesser city and overlooked by most travellers, it’s been reinventing itself since the 1970s collapse of its crucial shipbuilding industry. Today, this vibrant university town, a high-tech research centre and sustainability pioneer, is the second-largest city in Sweden. With its former warehouses now transformed into food markets, boiler houses into art galleries, and slaughterhouses into urban wineries, Gothenburg has been consistently ranked as the world’s most sustainable travel destination since 2016. Due to its growing appeal, its population is expected to increase by a third over the next 15 years.
