Trakt Forest Hotel

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

Trakt Forest Hotel are five ‘forest suites’ built on pillars and suspended above the ground in the middle of the deep Småland forests. Acclaimed Swedish architect Gert Wingård, who has designed the forest suites, refers to them as ‘floating rooms’ that leave a minimal environmental impact on their surroundings. For many years, foresters Sandra and Mattias Sälleteg have had a dream of developing Sällegården, the place where Mattias grew up. Since 2022, Scandinavian simplicity is combined with the comforts of contemporary hospitality right at the very heart of nature at Trakt Forest Hotel.

What are the rooms like?

The five 31 sq m suites are built on eight pillars each and float among the tree trunks in the woodlands. Built of wood and insulated with sustainable wood wool, all materials have been manually carried to the site to minimize the environmental impact of the build. Each suite features a kingsize bed, a bathroom with a shower, electric heating, a fireplace, a coffee machine, a tea kettle and a refrigerator. In the morning, a selection of local breakfast items is delivered to the suite.

What else?

In the large log house is Trakt Kitchen, the on-site restaurant which is also open to outside guests. The dishes have a nostalgic touch, as many of the recipes have been used on the main farm for several generations. Here, the foods are prepared at a slow pace; the sourdough is leavened, the meats are smoked and the jams are made from scratch on-site. The Hereford beef is from the farm, and so are most vegetables, fruits and berries. Eggs are supplied by the neighbouring farm. Guests are also invited to use the wood-fired sauna, located by a small lake around a one-kilometre walk from the property.

What’s the area like?

In the past, the thickly forested province of Småland has been seen as something that people travel through rather than travel to, such as from Stockholm to Malmö and the south, or from Gothenburg to the Baltic coast. It’s easy to become blasé about all the natural beauty when the landscape is so uniform. In recent years, however, Småland has experienced a bit of a renaissance with many new and unorthodox hospitality experiences popping up around the region. It is also home to the ‘glass kingdom’, Sweden’s epicentre for glass-making, and a popular region for hiking, trekking, fishing and cycling.
