The Nordics • Stay • The 5 best boutique and luxury hotels in Gothenburg, Sweden
Ask a dozen people about their favourite hotel, and you’ll likely get a dozen different responses. A favourite hotel is as much of a personal preference as your favourite movie, book or singer. But in our opinion, the best hotels have a few things in common: they feel intimate and personal (regardless of size or number of rooms), they have a distinctive vibe, the staff offers superb service and the architecture and interior design are unique and full of character. We love them even more when they are deeply ingrained in the local neighbourhood and culture. Here’s our list of five carefully crafted Gothenburg boutique and luxury hotels that tell a strong story.

Hotel Bellora is bright, pleasant and hip. The décor has a 1960s Italian theme, with black and white Dolce Vita-style images of headscarved models riding Vespas and huge Italian families eating al fresco. Its comfortable ground-floor bar and restaurant open into the street (in summer) and are popular with both residents and visitors, while a regular stream of gorgeous people flows through reception to the rooftop bar, which is one of the locations to be seen in town during the summer. At Hotel Bellora, the city’s social life comes to you.

The Hôtel Eggers in Gothenburg is an absolute gem. It was built in 1859 and transformed into a luxury hotel of world standards around the turn of the century in 1900. Since its beginnings, the 160-year-old has hosted royalty, artists, musicians and other notable visitors. Today, guests to Hôtel Eggers are met by a large, charming hotel where the property’s historical significance is evident. The grand entrance has stucco on the ceiling, gorgeous medallion wallpaper in red and gold, marble flooring, authentic carpets and elaborate columns. Eggers restaurant and bar serve delectable, classic dishes with a modern twist.
