The 5 best boutique and luxury hotels in Malmö, Sweden

Malmö’s most stylish and personal hotel stays

Ask a dozen people about their favourite hotel, and you’ll likely get a dozen different responses. A favourite hotel is as much of a personal preference as your favourite movie, book or singer. But in our opinion, the best hotels have a few things in common: they feel intimate and personal (regardless of size or number of rooms), they have a distinctive vibe, the staff offers superb service and the architecture and interior design are unique and full of character. We love them even more when they are deeply ingrained in the local neighbourhood and culture. Here’s our list of five carefully crafted Malmö boutique and luxury hotels that tell a strong story.

The Duxiana

What hotel can vouch for a better night’s sleep if not The Duxiana, an extension of the Swedish premium bed and furniture company Dux? Since 1926, the family-run company has set out to create the most comfortable sleeping experience possible. The Malmö hotel, which was designed by local firm Rumrum, is furnished with Dux’s own pieces, among them the Jetson chair, a 1969 design icon by Bruno Mathsson. The Duxiana also has a restaurant, especially popular for lunch, in the ground floor.

Story Hotel

Although originally a Stockholm hotel concept, few hotels feel as Malmö-esque as Story Hotel, with its rough-luxe look. The raw concrete walls and streamlined interiors of the rooms draw attention to the large windows, which frame the views of the city’s unique skyline and industrial harbour. Story Hotel is located on the top floors of Studio, a building designated for coworking and creative enterprise, and features a 250 sq m rooftop terrace.

MJ’s

Young, hip and fun, MJ’s is located on a happing pedestrian street that leads up to Lilla Torg, the epicentre for Malmö’s nightlife. The kitsch, over-the-top interior is effective in covering up MJ’s former life as Mäster Johan, a stale hotel that desperately needed a new lease on life. We love the central glass roof atrium, decorated with (faux) ivy and flowers, where both the breakfast buffet and dinner menu always manages to make our tastebuds zing. Get a room at MJ’s if you’re looking to enjoy a hoppin’ weekend away.

Clarion Hotel Malmö Live Sweden

04

Clarion Hotel Malmö Live

The best views in town are found at Clarion Hotel Malmö Live, a 25-storey skyscraper that locals jokingly have named ‘Malmhattan’. The 444-room hotel, which was designed by architecture firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen and opened to the public in 2015, doubles as a concert and conference hall and is home to Malmö Symphony Orchestra. The hotel has a sky bar at 85 metres above sea level and two restaurants by Swedish chef Marcus Samuelsson.

Elite Hotel Esplanade

Although the rooms and majority of communal areas at Elite Hotel Esplanade feel a bit lacklustre, this 127-room property has one major thing going for it. The hotel’s Pan-Asian eatery Quan had us at hello, and seduced us with its intense and luscious flavours, tasty cocktails and moody and sexy interiors by design studio Okidoki. Quan also serves up the hotel’s generous breakfast buffet, another star feature of this hotel.
