Gothenburg, Sweden

Jacy’z

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

The 28-story Kineum skyscraper, created by Reflex Architects, is a gleaming new beacon of mirror glass that lights up the Gothenburg skyline. It houses Jacy’z, a 233-room hotel with a variety of restaurant and bar concepts, a 100-meter-high pool club, and a sports club. This glitzy new urban resort can be compared to Sweden’s version of the Las Vegas Strip, where everything is bright, shiny, and kitschy – in a good way.

What are the rooms like?

The decor at Jacy’z is modelled after the glitz of 1960s Las Vegas, where all the details are in an airy, elegant colour scheme that is balanced by plush textiles and extra fluffy cushions. Jacy’z has 41 rooms that are a part of the JQ concept, a “hotel within the hotel” that promises an added dose of character and service. The small-scale JQ concept, with rooms on the 17th and 18th floor – offers a more exclusive experience with a secret speakeasy bar behind a massive brass door, and breakfast is enjoyed in the skybar (instead of the main lobby floor restaurant).

What else?

On floors 27 and 28, the Pachanga pool club offers one of Jacy’z most spectacular experiences. Even though it may be pouring outside (let’s face it, it often does in Gothenburg), order an ice-cold coco margarita, lean back in your sun chair, and unwind to the DJ spinning summer and beach tunes. The resort’s main restaurant, Archie’s, specialises in traditional American fare like burgers and steak, while Gogogaga, an Asian fusion eatery, offers craft cocktails and delectable bites with influences from Thailand, China, Japan, and other countries.

What’s the city like?

Halfway between Copenhagen and Oslo, along Sweden’s rocky coastline in the provinces of Västergötland, Bohuslän and Halland, lies Gothenburg (Göteborg in Swedish). Historically regarded as a lesser city and overlooked by most travellers, it’s been reinventing itself since the 1970s collapse of its crucial shipbuilding industry. Today, this vibrant university town, a high-tech research centre and sustainability pioneer, is the second-largest city in Sweden. With its former warehouses now transformed into food markets, boiler houses into art galleries, and slaughterhouses into urban wineries, Gothenburg has been consistently ranked as the world’s most sustainable travel destination since 2016. Due to its growing appeal, its population is expected to increase by a third over the next 15 years.
