What’s the cabin in a nutshell?
Let the sounds of a gentle breeze, the rolling waves and the distant squawks of seagulls lull you to sleep at Majamaja, an all-in-one off-grid cabin in the Helsinki archipelago. Here, perched on a cliff a mere 10-minute boat ride from downtown Helsinki, mankind meets wilderness in a truly unique hospitality experience created by Finnish architect Pekka Littow.
What are the rooms like?
Although minimalist and modest, Majamaja is thoughtfully designed to cater to all the basic needs of guests. The single cabin will in time be joined by four other identical entities. The smart construction minimises environmental impact through its resource-optimised wooden building system, and features patented off-grid technology for green energy production and water purification. It sleeps one to three guests at a time and has a small kitchenette with a stove, fridge and running water, as well as a shower and dry toilet. What more can one ask for?

Although we’re pretty sure most time will be spent on the outdoor patio soaking in those unobstructed sea views, there are other things to see and do around the Laajasalo islands. Locally sourced food and beverage kits are available to book in advance, and there’s even a sauna available for those wanting to experience authentic Finnish life in the archipelago.
What’s the area like?
The archipelago of Helsinki consists of around 330 islands, which consist of both rocky coastal stretches and sandy beaches. Do as the inhabitants of Helsinki and escape the hustle and bustle of the city by seeking refuge on one or several of the islands for a few days. Laajasalo, the island group where Majamaja is located, has a population of around 19 000 people.
