The Retreat at Blue Lagoon

What’s the hotel in a nutshell?

One of the 25 wonders of the world, Blue Lagoon harnesses the power of geothermal seawater to create transformational spa experiences. This retreat is part of the main Blue Lagoon spa complex, built directly into the lava flow of a 755-year-old eruption in the heart of Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark. Basalt Architects designed the retreat in 2018, which includes a subterranean spa, a private geothermal lagoon, two restaurants, and a hotel surrounded by the iconic Blue Lagoon.

What are the rooms like?

The 62 suites at The Retreat at Blue Lagoon feature stunning views of the waters and lava fields, with some having their own private section of the lagoon. The chic, muted interiors offer floor-to-ceiling windows for maximum views. The feather-soft beds provide a restful night’s sleep, and if you’re visiting during the winter when days are short, keep the curtains open so you can see the Northern Lights. Should the mystical lights appear at the hotel, wake-up calls will be provided. The bathroom is stocked with the company’s Blue Lagoon toiletries, perfect for a long and relaxing soak in the free-standing tub.

What else?

The 4,000 square meter spa, which connects The Retreat at Blue Lagoon hotel to the public lagoon, is the focal point of the establishment. The spa offers access to the Blue Lagoon Ritual, a three-step face and body regimen that uses the silica, algae, and mineral elements of the lagoon in a nourishing, revitalising treatment, in addition to a private lagoon with swim-up direct access to the bar. For a day of pure luxury, there are also numerous relaxation spaces, steam rooms, ice pools, and sauna amenities. The Michelin-recommended Moss Restaurant is located on the top floor and offers superb reimaginings of Icelandic cuisine from head chef Aggi Sverrisson. Blue Lagoon’s second on-site restaurant, Lava, has a wall of solid lava, truly bringing the outdoors to your dining space. There’s also a spa restaurant and a café for a more casual bite to eat.

What’s the area like?

The smallest district in Iceland is called Suðurnes, or Southern Peninsula, and it is situated at the southwesterlymost point of the island. As it borders the city of Reykjavk, it is one of Iceland’s most densely populated areas. The peninsula is distinguished by vast lava fields and active volcanism beneath its surface, which prevents much vegetation. The Kleifarvatn lake and the Krsuvk geothermal area are located in the southern side of the peninsula, where there are a lot of hot springs. It also houses the Blue Lagoon and Iceland’s sole major international airport, Keflavik. On the peninsula are a few fishing settlements, including Grindavk, Njarvk, and Sandgeri.
