Sunnmøre Alps is a popular ski region in Norway located between the towns of Ålesund and Molde, close to the city of Åndalsnes. The mountain range encircles the Hjørundfjorden in the municipalities of Volda, Ørsta, Stranda, and Sykkylven. The skiing season is longer here than in most of the other major ski regions in Norway and runs from early December until late April. The slopes in Sunnmøre Alps have something for all levels of skiers, from top-level extreme experts to young families looking for a fun weekend out. With a total piste length of 120 kilometres, and with 1,500 kilometres of marked trails and a world-class off-piste system in the mountains of Romsdalen, there are some long runs to be made.

Storfjord Hotel

One of Norway’s most well-known fjords is right next to the idyllically remote Storfjord Hotel, which is tucked away in a lush forest. This boutique hotel, which is made up of a collection of traditional lafta-style Norwegian cabins, offers views of the mountains and fjords, and has a fine-dining establishment called the Kitchen that serves four-course dinners every night. Inside, a soothing palette, snug corners, and carefully selected art and antiques create a calming combination of traditional Norwegian features and ultra-modern design. Explore the striking surroundings during the day, then relax in the sauna and soak your worries away in the outdoor hot tub.

Hotel Union Øye

Hotel Union Øye is an island of comfort in a fairytale land of adventure, nestled between steep mountains and overlooking a tranquil fjord. The hotel contains so many memories of historical figures that you’ll feel close to them. It first opened in 1891, catering to discerning travellers from the start. Kaiser Wilhelm, Queen Maud, Princess Victoria, King Oscar, Karen Blixen, Knut Hamsun, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Edvard Grieg, Henrik Ibsen, William Cecil Slingsby, Roald Amundsen, Kristofer Randers… all fell in love with the atmosphere within these walls. After years of neglect, the hotel was restored to its former glory in 1989 and is now one of the world’s most unique hotels. Each of the 38 guestrooms and suites is uniquely decorated and named after a famous guest who once stayed there. Chef Knut Edvard Kjersem celebrates the region’s great traditions and some of the best local produce in the world in the hotel’s gourmet restaurant.

Sagafjord Hotel

The charming Sagafjord Hotel is located in Saeb, right on the shores of the beautiful Hjrundfjord, in the heart of the Sunnmøre Alps. The hotel was built in the 1980s, but parts of the structure are from a 200-year-old school that used to be here. Sagafjord Hotel has 40 comfortable rooms spread across the main building and inside traditional wooden lodges in our yard. Every room has its own distinct personality and the tranquillity of fjord life will lull you to sleep. The head chef at the on-site restaurant prefers first-rate local ingredients from sea and land, and he knows when and where to find them.

Juvet Landscape Hotel

Juvet Landscape Hotel is a boutique hotel surrounded by western Norway’s spectacular nature. Its minimalist architecture, the epitome of a harmonious union of nature and modern design, does not distract from its natural surroundings but instead provides strong visual effects that only enhance these incredible views. It’s all about what you see on the outside here, as the rooms are decorated with only the most essential furnishings and details. As the spaces are also quite dark on the inside, the experience gives you the impression of being inside a camera, with the window acting as the lens. At Juvet, you can choose from seven landscape rooms, two minimalistic ‘bird houses’ or the ‘chalet writing room’. Juvet Landscape might seem familiar to some, as it played a supporting role in Ex Machina.
