What’s the restaurant in a nutshell?
Alchemist is a Michelin-starred restaurant located in Refshaleøen, a remote area in Copenhagen known for its industrial buildings and a famous former shipyard. The restaurant is renowned for its unique and immersive dining experience, featuring a spectacular planetarium-like dome, with guests being taken through several “acts” during their meal, each featuring different locations, types of art and extraordinary culinary craftsmanship. The mastermind behind this dining experience is head chef Rasmus Munk, who has a dream of creating a holistic dining experience. The architecture and design of the restaurant are also striking, with the entrance featuring two-ton-heavy bronze doors that lead into a mystical world.
What are the signature dishes?
The culinary offerings at Alchemist are built on a foundation of traditional methods, cutting-edge research, and the head chef’s relentless pursuit of premium ingredients. Diners can anticipate a diverse array of caviar, premier seafood and pigeon aged in beeswax, all presented in imaginative and captivating ways. Some dishes also carry a deeper message, such as a cod dish accompanied by edible ‘plastic’ to raise awareness of oceanic pollution or a chocolate bar shaped like a coffin to bring attention to the issue of child labour in the chocolate industry. In addition, Alchemist has a comprehensive sparkling wine selection, which is considered one of the best in the world by some.
What’s the neighbourhood like?
Refshaleøen, located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, has undergone a dramatic transformation from a rundown industrial district to one of the city’s most vibrant and sought-after areas. Originally an artificial island, it is now connected to the larger island of Amager and offers a unique blend of history and modernity. Visitors can experience a wide range of activities on the island, from cycling along the picturesque waterfront and admiring the colourful street art, to indulging in world-class gastronomy and taking a refreshing dip in the sea.
