Vipp Pencil Case

What’s the retreat in a nutshell?

In a Bauhaus-inspired former Danish pencil factory, where the iconic yellow Viking graphite pencil used to be manufactured since 1914, a one-bedroom retreat creates the ultimate base from which to explore the Islands Brygge harbourfront neighbourhood and the rest of Copenhagen. Vipp Pencil Case is part of Danish design brand Vipp’s ever-expanding portfolio of unique and innovative hospitality experiences around the Nordic region, including Vipp Shelter in Sweden, Vipp Loft, Vipp Chimney House and Vipp Farmhouse in Denmark, as well as The Bolder in Norway.

What are the rooms like?

The 90 square metre space open plan apartment, designed by local interior designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard, is small yet perfectly appointed. It includes an airy kitchen and dining area, a cosy double bedroom and a compact bathroom. As this hospitality experience doubles as a showroom for Vipp’s range of products, the brand’s warm grey ‘V1’ kitchen, lighting and solid oak and Jura stone ‘Cabin’ table features alongside pieces from other Danish design brands like Kvadrat, Dinesen and B&O. Sprinkled around the apartment is also work by a number of local artists – whimsical vessels by Karl Monies, figurative wall art by Thomas Juul-Jensen and Cathrine Raben Davidsen, and minimalist plaster wall sculptures by Cecilie Vår Norsahl – making the space feel like an art collector’s dwelling.

What else?

Adjacent to Vipp Pencil Case is Vipp’s very own 400 square metre supper club where some of the most noteworthy chefs from around the world are invited to stage one-night-only gastronomic feasts for the lucky 26 guests that manage to score a seat at the communal table.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

Islands Brygge – or simply ‘Brygge’ as the locals call it – is a residential harbourfront area often overlooked by visitors. Often described as a small village within the big city, the natural borders created by the waterways surrounding the area give it that cosy small-town vibe that makes it unique. It is also home to the popular Havnebadet Islands Brygge, the city’s first harbour bath.
