Copenhagen, Denmark

Andersen & Maillard

What’s the bakery in a nutshell?

Andersen & Maillard is more than just a bakery; it’s a testament to the shared culinary passion of co-owner and coffee maestro Hans Kristian Andersen, and former Noma chef, Milton Abel. With several branches across Copenhagen, this coffee and pastry mini-emporium shines brightest in its Nordhavn location, our particular favourite. Designed by local architectural designer Danielle Siggerud, the Nordhavn location is an ode to the area’s industrial past, intertwining raw aesthetics with soft, warm minimalism. It’s a spot where every detail matters, from the Japanese-inspired, honest wooden furniture to the carefully curated art pieces by Danish and international artists.

What are the signature dishes?

Each visit to Andersen & Maillard is a gourmet journey, with the star attractions undoubtedly being the pastries. The masterstroke in their lineup is the viral Croissant Cube, a unique spin on the traditional croissant, sculpted into a cube and filled with a pistachio-flavoured cream that proves simplicity can indeed walk hand in hand with creativity. Equally indulgent is the Chocolate Croissant, generously filled with soft chocolate ganache, making each bite a small wonder of culinary delight. The open-plan layout of the café adds an additional layer to your experience, offering a glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into every pastry.

Drinks, anyone?

Andersen & Maillard’s drinks menu is a meticulous exploration of the art of coffee brewing. Each cup, a testament to Andersen’s expertise, promises an immersive coffee experience that celebrates the synergy between the roaster, the brewer and the barista. The café’s commitment to transparency is evident in its coffee offerings, inviting patrons to savour the nuances of roasting and brewing. From the rich, invigorating aroma that permeates the space to the final sip of your meticulously crafted coffee, Andersen & Maillard offers a journey for the senses.

What’s the neighbourhood like?

Nordhavn, the vibrant waterfront district of Copenhagen, is a testament to the city’s extraordinary urban metamorphosis. Once a bustling hub of the shipping industry, this locale has blossomed into a desirable neighbourhood that artfully juxtaposes traditional buildings and gleaming high-rises. It’s a district that never sleeps, teeming with a multitude of shops, hip eateries and quaint cafés. It also offers an immersive experience of Copenhagen’s love for the outdoors with public open-air swimming in the harbour, a true spectacle of urban life merging with nature. Nordhavn’s unique blend of history, modernity and a keen sense of community makes it not just a place to live, but a lifestyle to embrace.
