The Nordics • Insider guides • My Nordics, as told by artist Rosanna Julie Svensson
Discover the world of Rosanna Julie Svensson, the artistic mind behind Roxy Ceramics. After a fulfilling venture in the fashion domain with By Malene Birger and Birger Christensen Collective, Svensson pivoted towards her profound passion for ceramics. The tranquil Danish island of Bornholm became her haven, where alongside her family, she delves into the realm of ceramics, drawing inspiration from the boundless nature and the spirited creative community surrounding her. Each stroll along the coast, just steps away from her home, enriches her palette, translating into the serene yet evocative ceramic pieces she crafts.
The tactile allure of clay entwined with Svensson’s intuitive craftsmanship narrates a tale of patience, observation and the seamless dialogue between the artist and the elements. As she unveils her beloved spots and recounts her experiences around Denmark, Svensson offers a glimpse into a life where creativity flourishes amidst nature’s quiet splendour and the camaraderie of a nurturing artisan community.
… Copenhagen. I lived in Copenhagen for 20 years and love the vibe of the city. The last time I visited Copenhagen, back in September, I was walking late on a Friday night down the streets of Gammel Kongevej, Værnedamsvej and Vesterbrogade. I felt the city was totally buzzing with many happy people enjoying the Indian Summer, and it filled me with such love for the city.
… the coastal path right in front of our house in Svaneke, Bornholm. The nature there is astonishing and depending on the weather, the experience can vary greatly. I find a lot of inspiration when I take my walks there.
… Strandhotellet in Sandvig, Bornholm. The atmosphere is truly enchanting. It embodies the essence of a beach hotel, permeating through the rooms, reception, restaurant – simply every facet of the hotel.
… Bottega Barlie at Fredericiagade in Copenhagen. I would highly recommend their oysters served with fermented hot sauce, paired with a refreshing glass of white wine.
… Ruby Bar in Copenhagen. I usually order a Negroni or Old Fashioned cocktail – my two favourites.
… Beau Marché in Copenhagen. I make it a point to visit every time I’m in Copenhagen. I adore their selection of interior decor and find inspiration with every visit.
… Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. This venue is steeped in history, originally constructed in the 17th century as Charlottenborg Palace, and now serves as the official exhibition gallery of the Royal Danish Academy of Art. They often host captivating exhibitions.
… Eco Beach Camp at Balka Beach on Bornholm. Situated in a beautiful spot on Bornholm, this camp is surrounded by the world’s finest beach sand and tranquil nature, making it a very special place to unwind.
… embracing the beautiful nature. Bornholm has a diverse range of natural landscapes to offer. You can visit the pristine white sand beaches in the south of the island or drive up north to witness the rocky terrain and rugged nature. All of this is encompassed on an island that measures approximately 125 kilometres in circumference.
