Gotland, Sweden

The 10 best hotels for a Gotland island escape

10 stays that capture Gotland’s mythical atmosphere

The island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea may very well be Sweden’s most mythical place – if you ask a Swede, that is. Perhaps it is the unique landscape with a large collection of exotic trees and plants that flourish here, or the column-like limestone ‘rauk’ formations found along the island’s shores. Or its heritage, which is rich in Viking Age history, and its main town Visby which is protected as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Gotland’s uniqueness has visitors flock from near and far. We list 10 of our favourite stays around the island.

01

Fabriken Furillen

The former factory in the limestone quarries of Furillen, an island on the northeastern coast of Gotland, has been transformed into an exceptional hospitality project. Housed in the workshop, this boutique hotel was conceived by a photographer with a profound love of interior design. The result is quite spectacular – the paired-down industrial interiors surrounded by the rough and rugged landscape are a visual feast with at least fifty shades of grey.

Hotel Stelor

Known among both foodies and music lovers, Hotel Stelor attracts a creative crowd with its restaurant and concert barn (where some of Sweden’s most well-known artists perform during the summers). The rustic and romantic seven-room hotel – with five standard rooms and two suites, each uniquely decorated – is housed in a 1720 Gotland farmhouse. Don’t forget to bring your swimming suit, as Hotel Stelor is surrounded by water with a lake in the back and the Baltic Sea at the front.

Djupvik Hotel

At first glance, you might wonder if you’ve arrived at Nikki Beach in St. Tropez. But the majestic pines found on the property are a tell-tale sign that you’re in fact on the island of Gotland. Djupvik Hotel, a mere 30-minute drive from the mediaeval town of Visby, has six large hotel rooms. The pool and lounge area are this property’s main draws, where we love to spend the day in a lounge chair sipping on Djupvik’s very own akvavit on ice.

Hotell Helgeand Wisby

Hotell Helgeand Wisby in Gotland stands just outside Visby’s historic ring wall, adjacent to the majestic cathedral. This family-owned hotel, set in one of the town’s oldest buildings, exudes rustic charm across its 17-room property, complete with its own serene park. A standout feature is room 15, the knight’s room, where guests can indulge in an atmosphere of medieval elegance. This room is adorned with muted red plastered limestone walls and features a majestic four-poster Carpe Diem bed and a luxurious hot tub, blending historical grandeur with modern comfort. Each of the hotel’s 20 rooms, including this exquisite knight’s room, is designed with medieval inspiration and modern standards, ensuring guests experience unparalleled quality of sleep. Maven

Spread out like mushrooms in a Gotland forest glade are Maven’s 14 cottages, each with their own look and size. There is no official reception, but rest assured your temporary neighbours will be there to welcome you with open arms. Maven is all about community and the meeting of minds. There is a communal ‘bath room’ area with a fire-heated sauna and a hot tub, and ‘the studio’ is a space for impromptu get-togethers and joint meals.

Fårösunds Fästning

In the 19th century, when Sweden’s capacity to protect its neutrality was questioned after the Crimean War, the Fårö inlet in northern Gotland was fortified with several artillery batteries. Three of these were later converted into the Fårösunds Fästning hotel. Who knew that staying in a fortress, decorated with furniture by local design manufacturer G.A.D, could be this cosy? The 16-room property also boasts a popular organic restaurant.

Surflogiet

Surflogiet, on Gotland’s western coast, is a little piece of surfer’s paradise. Wake up to the sound of crashing waves in one of the tents, grab your board and hit the waves. Surflogiet is anything but an austere experience – the beds are by Hästens, the beach bar serves organic, vegan and local foods only, and there are yoga classes and healing massages available for booking.

Clarion Hotel Wisby

Located near the tiny Visby harbour is Clarion Hotel Wisby. The building’s history, which dates back to mediaeval times, can be found in many of the interior features – ask for one of the rooms with cross-vaulted ceilings and columns over 700 years old. The hotel, which merges the old with all the amenities and facilities valued by the modern-day traveller, has an indoor pool, a restaurant and bar and the Selma City Spa.

Villa Alma

In recent years, Emma Lindau and Tobbe Larsson have transformed Villa Alma into the place to see and be seen in Visby. Located just outside the city walls in the Almedalen park (hence the name of the hotel), this stylish and quirky boutique hotel has a popular garden terrace. Lindau and Larsson have also teamed up with celebrated Swedish chef Markus Aujalay to make it a gastro destination in its own right.

Warfsholm

The Warfsholm guesthouse, located on a beautiful cape a few metric miles south of Visby, has welcomed guests since 1899. If you plan on staying at Warfsholm, make sure to reserve one of the eight rooms in Villa Wöhler, the pale yellow turn-of-the-century wooden villa that kind of reminds us of Pippi Longstocking’s house Villa Villekulla (which can be visited in Visby, no less). Breakfast, lunch, dinner and ‘fika’ are served in the guesthouse’s restaurant.
