The 5 best boutique and luxury hotels in Aarhus

Aarhus’s most stylish and personal hotel stays

Ask a dozen people about their favourite hotel, and you’ll likely get a dozen different responses. A favourite hotel is as much of a personal preference as your favourite movie, book or singer. But in our opinion, the best hotels have a few things in common: they feel intimate and personal (regardless of size or number of rooms), they have a distinctive vibe, the staff offers superb service and the architecture and interior design are unique and full of character. We love them even more when they are deeply ingrained in the local neighbourhood and culture. Here’s our list of five carefully crafted Arhus boutique and luxury hotels that tell a strong story.

Hotel Royal Aarhus

Hotel Royal Aarhus is a grand and eccentric hotel located in the heart of Aarhus. The hotel was inspired by a visit to the Winter Palace, which resulted in the owner creating something equally lavish in Aarhus. The hotel has a prime location next to the Cathedral, with great shops, cafes and restaurants on the doorstep. The hotel is known for its big, bold personality that’s all its own, and the very antithesis of Scandi minimalism. The rooms are generously sized with antique furnishings, terracotta walls adorned with original artworks and lavish loos with ornate gold-painted decorations.

Villa Provence

Villa Provence is a charming and romantic boutique hotel filled with character, colour and southern French design cues. The hotel’s design contrasts Scandi minimalism, making it a unique place to stay in Aarhus. The lounge is relaxing and worthy of an interiors magazine shoot, with gleaming white-painted wooden floors, comfy floral sofas and interesting bric-a-brac picked up in France and Italy. The cobbled courtyard is landscaped by Danish celebrity florist Tage Anderson, filled with huge pots of roses, hydrangeas and neatly-clipped conifers. The 39 rooms are different, but there is no stinting on the details, with excellent mattresses, quality linens, robes, slippers, and a decent minibar in the wardrobe.

Book1

Book1 is a design hostel in the heart of Aarhus. This modern accommodation is a former public library, which has been transformed into a hybrid between a hostel and a hotel, catering to the needs of modern travellers. The hostel’s design is inspired by the original architecture, with custom-made designs throughout the premises, including ‘pod dorms’ inspired by luxury capsule hotels in Japan. The food court, led by a local food entrepreneur, offers a mix of food concepts, such as Nordic pizza, Danish ‘smørrebrød’ sandwiches and a bakery. The lobby bar is the perfect place to grab a drink after a long day of exploring the city. With 444 beds, a sauna, self-service laundry facilities, ping pong and events every week, Book1 is the perfect place to stay for extraordinary experiences, quality and design.
