Foodie finds: Stockholm’s 5 best spots for sandwiches

Explore Stockholm’s best sandwiches and coolest delis

Stockholm’s sandwich culture is experiencing a renaissance, transforming a humble staple into a culinary statement. Once synonymous with quick lunches and uninspired office snacks, the city’s evolving food scene has elevated sandwiches to an art form. Influenced by global traditions – Italian delis, New York street food and Scandinavian craftsmanship – today’s sandwiches combine premium ingredients with thoughtful preparation. Artisanal breads, locally sourced fillings and bold flavours have redefined what a sandwich can be, appealing to gourmands and casual diners alike. This newfound creativity reflects broader trends in food, where simplicity meets sophistication. With innovative chefs and eateries embracing the format, Stockholm’s sandwich boom shows no signs of slowing down.

Sandhäxan

Sandhäxan, a compact culinary hotspot in Stockholm’s Vasastan, redefines the humble sandwich. Born from actor Erik Johansson, designer Mattias Svensson and musician Fredrik Sundberg’s shared nostalgia for childhood snacks, this eatery embraces indulgence with expert flair. The kitchen, helmed by chef William Thorén, churns out stacked creations like the signature Fried Chicken Sandwich – crispy chicken, punchy pickles and rich mayo cradled in beautiful bread. The decor, crafted by Svensson, fuses industrial edge with a lived-in charm, creating a space where food takes centre stage without pretence. In August 2023, they released Sandhäxans magiska mackor – a cookbook with 45 recipes to recreate their indulgent sandwiches at home.

Bar Schiacciate

Bar Schiacciate brings a slice of Italian authenticity to Stockholm with several locations around town, the Drottninggatan location being the most central. Known for its schiacciata bread which is cold-fermented for two days for a perfectly airy texture, the bar layers it with premium ingredients such as mortadella, creamy stracciatella and crushed pistachios. The ‘Mortadellan’ sandwich is a customer favourite, us included. It balances savoury richness with a delicate crunch. Interiors embrace minimalist charm, blending white brick walls, sleek concrete and warm lighting to evoke the atmosphere of a bustling Italian café. The team imports ingredients and fillings directly from Italy, delivering an experience as authentic as its Florentine inspiration.

Dåndimpen’s Smörgåsshop

Dåndimpens Smörgåsshop in Årsta, is a hidden gem in the truest sense and a destination for sandwich aficionados. Brought to life by the team behind Bageri Petrus, the shop offers creations like the Lox Bagel. We can’t fault the latter. It is a sublime pairing of freshly baked bread and delicious cured salmon. Though slightly off the beaten track, its location adds to the charm – those who venture to Årsta are richly rewarded. The cosy, hipster-inspired interior sets the stage for a relaxed meal, while the bread, sourced directly from their own bakery, is as fresh as it is delicious. It’s no wonder this spot has earned a devoted following in Stockholm’s culinary scene.

Dubbla Deli opened in 2024 and is located in Stockholm’s Hötorgshallen. It brings the flair of New York’s Italian delis to the heart of the city. Founded by Sveriges Mästerkock (Sweden’s version of the Master Chef franchise) alumni Hedvig Henrekson and Zacharias Lindqvist Hansson, the deli celebrates their love of sandwiches with a menu as bold as its inspiration. The signature Meatball Hero Sub channels Joey Tribbiani’s favourite from Friends, packed with homemade meatballs and rich tomato sauce. Vegetarians will enjoy their crispy fried aubergine sandwich.
