What’s the restaurant in a nutshell?
Located on Kongens Nytorv, the largest square in Copenhagen, is chef Andreas Bagh’s restaurant Esmée. Inspired by La Belle Epoque, a French era characterised by optimism, prosperity and cultural innovation, this casual brasserie is French at heart but with a distinct Northern twist. Designed by Space Copenhagen, the prolific duo behind the interiors of venues such as Radisson Collection Royal Hotel, Geranium and Balthazar, have done a delightful job in creating an elegant space that feels as airy, bright and lush as a spring day somewhere in the south of France.
What are the signature dishes?
The food is deeply rooted in classic French cuisine, but with a slightly lighter and fresher Nordic touch, which is Bagh’s signature. Start with gougères, choux pastry cheese puffs, filled with Comté cheese and topped with a decadent slice of black truffle, and follow with Esmée’s signature ‘rotisserie’ whole sole served with mussel sauce and new Danish leeks. Don’t be tempted to skip on the sourdough baguette with garlic and butter. Also, look out for the photogenic bright pink cherry soft serve with rice pudding and roasted almonds that has been making the rounds on Instagram.
Drinks, anyone?
Esmée is the kind of place where you’ll find the champagne corks being popped all day long. There’s also a decent wine list with a good selection of wines served by the glass. When it comes to Esmées cocktail menu, which changes seasonally, there are a few signatures. The Rom Kys Old Fashioned contains brown buttered rum, vanilla and orange bitters, and is topped with a meringue kiss. Those with a penchant for the more savoury and experimental will enjoy the Caviar Martini with vodka, dill and caviar aquavit and dry vermouth, which comes with a 4 gram caviar spoon.
What’s the neighbourhood like?
Copenhagen’s Indre By is the area bounded by the lakes circling the inner city and the harbour. This historic centre reflects the entire city’s extent during the reign of King Christian IV (1577-1648), when the town was fortified. It is home to most of Copenhagen’s museums and attractions. Strøget, the city’s famed pedestrian shopping street, runs right through it. If you’re new to the city, we recommend you start here, right at the heart of the bustling city, working your way outward to other neighbouring areas as you explore.
