The 6 most stylish ski hotels and resorts in Sweden

The ultimate places to stay while alpine skiing in Sweden

Exceptionally long seasons with early snow, breathtaking views of unspoiled nature and more elbow room in the lifts and on the slopes. What’s not to love about alpine skiing in Sweden? Sure, the Alps might offer longer runs and more glitz and glamour, but Sweden sure makes up for it with its laid-back vibe, northern light spotting and cool accommodations. Here is our top list of Sweden’s most stylish ski hotels and resorts.

Located in Åre, Northern Europe’s largest and Sweden’s most upscale ski resort, Copperhill Mountain Lodge sits far up the mountain with a lift right outside the door. Completely enveloped in nature, the 112 room property gives a true sense of freedom and closeness to nature. The cosy restaurant serves up Nordic fare, and there’s a stunning spa with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool overlooking the Åreskutan mountain area.

Niehku Mountain Villa

It isn’t possible to get further north than to Riksgränsen, a ski resort bordering Norway. While out skiing, friends Johan Lindblom and Clas Darvik came across a derelict railway workshop in the middle of nowhere. With the help of architecture firm Krook & Tjäder and interior design studio Stylt, the site was reborn as a 14 room boutique resort and the world’s northernmost heliski lodge. After a day of winter adventures on the slopes, guests are invited to continue their experience at Niehku’s restaurant, where head chef Ragnar Martinsson prepares a multi-course meal inspired by the Arctic kitchen.

Fjällnäs

Jonas Åslund was a pioneer in Swedish alpine tourism, hosting Swedish members of the royal family and international celebrities at Fjällnäs as early as 1882. On the shores of Malmagen lake, with water clean enough to drink, this property’s 41 rooms are divided among six wooden houses – all with their own unique character. At the Mii Gullo day spa – Sámi for ‘how are you?’ – guests can enjoy various treatments and a 30-degree hot tub overlooking the lake. At Fjällnäs’s ingredient-centric restaurant, the culinary treats are a homage to the Nordic region and the area’s rich culture and history.

Hotel Åregården

When the railway came to town in 1882, connecting Åre with the Norwegian city of Trondheim, it sparked the first tourism in the alpine area. A few years later, in 1895, Åre’s first hotel opened. Despite a name change (from Hotel Åreskutan to Hotel Åregården), the hotel lives on and has preserved all of its unique character and charm. Housed in a green timber villa, this 54 room property has become a melting pot for visitors and locals alike, who flock here to enjoy the wine bar, the two cocktail bars and the cosy restaurant after long days on the slopes. There are also a number of self-service apartments available for larger parties of guests.

Hotell Fjällgården

One of few ski in ski outs in Åre, Hotell Fjällgården is located along the Fjällgårdsexpressen chair lift. The atmospheric mountain lodge, which has a total of 64 rooms and suites, was inaugurated by His Royal Highness Prince Carl of Sweden and Norway in 1910. After a day of skiing, head to the relax and spa area for some TLC for your limbs and muscles, followed by dinner around the fireplace – we recommend opting for a nostalgic cheese fondue. Hotell Fjällgården has teamed up with Hyundai to offer guests the complimentary use of cars equipped with rooftop cargo carriers from Thule to further explore Åre’s slopes.

Skistar Lodge Hundfjället

Approximately 270 kilometres from Oslo and 400 kilometres from Stockholm, the family-oriented ski resort of Sälen’s newest ski hotel doesn’t disappoint. Skistar Lodge Hundfjället, a ski behemoth with 153 rooms and apartments of various sizes, still manages to keep the guest experience tasteful and comfortable. Some of the hotel’s main draws include the sauna and gym, as well as the Pontus i Sälen and Mondo restaurant concepts, both headed by celebrated Swedish chef and entrepreneur Pontus Fritiof.
